To help you fill your shopping basket, we have posted a store-by-store list of what's available on our website and we will also be putting out Localvore shelf labels in stores this week.  Sweet Pea has made their own wonderful Local Product signs as well which you should definitely check out-- products are labeled "Localvore" on the right side.  They are also expecting a shipment of Butterworks Farm Sunflower Oil this week which has been long-awaited by Valley Localvores.  Thanks Carin and Tom!

Featured Recipe
Carrot and Potato Latkes with Spiced Sour Cream
3 tbsp whole wheat flour or pastry flour
1 cup grated carrot
1/2 tsp salt
2/3 cup minced onion
1 cup grated potato
1 garlic glove, minced
1 egg, beaten
pepper to taste
3 tbsp sour cream or yogurt
2 tbsp horseradish or chopped chives or some other flavoring
1 tbsp butter
How to Prepare :

Whisk together egg and flour in a large bowl. Stir in the carrot, potato, salt, pepper, onion, egg and garlic. This is your latke mixture. In a seperate bowl, mix sour cream or yogurt with the flavoring. Set aside.

In a large well-seasoned skillet, heat the butter over medium-high heat. Form the latke mixture into two balls of equal size. When the butter beings to brown, add the latke balls to the skillet, and press each down with the palm of your hand to a cake 1.5 inches thick and 5-6 inches wide. Turn the heat to medium, and brown the latkes for 4-6 minutes or until they are deep brown on the underside. Then turn the cakes over, and cook them for 4-5 minutes more. Serve them topped with dollops of the flavored sour cream/yogurt mixture.
Serves 2 people for dinner.

After the great success of our September '06 challenge, the Mad River Valley Localvore Project is excited to announce a winter challenge. The Eat Local Challenge is an event when participants pledge to eat only locally grown and produced foods - this time in the middle of the winter - an even greater challenge! For the winter challenge participants will have the option of choosing to pledge for a meal, a day, or the entire week. We've posted a special page of recipes which can be made from locally available foods in the winter, as well as a list of where to find local ingredients in the Mad River Valley.

This year, the Winter Localvore Challenge will take place in the Mad River Valley for one week: January 29- February 4, 2007. The challenge is to eat only foods grown, produced, or raised within a 100-mile radius of your home - for a meal, a day, a week - you decide what is a challenge for you.

There is an abundance of food produced here in Vermont, even in the middle of winter. We have access to root vegetables, wonderful cheeses and other dairy products, humanely raised meat and eggs, whole grains, and much more!

While eating 100% locally for a week is totally possible, we realize that it might be a bit more tasty if we include the option to spice things up a little. Therefore our Challenge will include the Marco Polo Exception for salt and dried spices. In addition, we realize that many of us have certain foods which we just cannot live without (caffeine, anyone?), so each Localvore can choose up to five Wildcards during the week-- specific foods which cannot be obtained locally but we consider critical to our daily existence (common examples include coffee, tea, chocolate, olive oil, etc). We leave the choice up to you, and ask you to consider your Wildcards in advance and plan your meals accordingly.

The Localvore Challenge is not about deprivation, it is a celebration of all the wonderful food that is available to us here in Vermont! It is an opportunity for us to stretch ourselves, be creative in our food choices, and learn more about where our food comes from.

The Mad River Valley Localvore Project will be hosting events throughout the year to help educate participants about local food resources, and during the week of the Winter Challenge we will help to coordinate potlucks and other events (stay tuned to our Events page).
