Practical Steps to Planning Your Garden

Led by Nancy Turner and Dave Cain

WORKSHOP LOCATION UPDATE

The Workshop will be held as planned at Nancy and Dave's, but we will be inside of the Yurt since it seems that it will be pretty cold and white out in the garden.  Click here for directions.

A Seven Days for the Earth 2007 Event

Wednesday, April 18 6:00pm to 7:30pm

  • Did you go crazy ordering seeds this year and now you don't know where to start with planting them?

  • Have you been wanting to start a veggie garden, but just don't know where to begin?

  • Are you already feeling pressure that you are getting a late start on your garden this year?

  • Do you usually think about starting your garden when the first real veggies of the season start coming and and then you realize you are too late?

Come to this garden workshop and get rid of that "garden anxiety."

Nancy and Dave will demonstrate how they keep all this stuff straight so you can start your garden in an organized manner and keep track of the information you need from year to year. They get tremendous pleasure from gardening and love to share their enthusiasm with others.

Their garden work includes a seed starting/transplant strategy, raised beds, crop rotation, season extension, composting, and a lot of trial and error. Having started small, they have expanded their garden and their efforts bit-by-bit each year, learning from experience and other community gardeners.

Joining Nancy and Dave are Jeremy Gulley and Sally Kendall who have been gardening commercially at Rootswork for the past two seasons and have much to offer from their experience.

We will start out by learning about starting your own seedlings vs. buying transplants, learning which veggies you want to self-seed, and learn about the best way to start your transplants. Then we will see what Nancy and Dave have already started in their garden in their cold frames. From there we will get a look at their raised bed gardens and learn about what they will be doing in the next several weeks to assure a bountiful harvest this coming summer.

Please come with your own tips and ideas to share with others.

  • When: Wednesday, April 18th 6:00pm to 7:30pm
  • Where: Nancy and Dave's at 715 East Road, Waitsfield (at the intersection of Common, Joslin Hill. North, and East Roads - go east on East Road and look for the mailbox with the bike frame on the left hand side of the road)

For those who don't know...Nancy and Dave live in a Yurt that they built themselves four years ago. If you want a tour of the Yurt or you want to walk around their gardens before the formal program, please come at 5:30.

Nancy was on The Dinner Hour on February 27th talking about their garden planning.  Click here to download that show.
